Aspartate aminotransferase is important for the metabolism of amino acids
and Krebs-cycle related organic acids. In plants, it is involved in nitrogen
metabolism and in aspects of carbon and energy metabolism. The enzyme
catalyses the reaction:
L-aspartate + 2-oxoglutarate = oxaloacetate + L-glutamate
Aminotransferases share certain mechanistic features with other pyridoxal-
phosphate dependent enzymes, such as the covalent binding of the pyridoxal-
phosphate group to a lysine residue [1].
TRANSAMINASE is a 6-element fingerprint that provides a signature for
aspartate aminotransferases. The fingerprint was derived from an initial
alignment of 13 sequences: the motifs were drawn from conserved regions
spanning the C-terminal half of the alignment - motif 3 includes the
region encoded by PROSITE pattern AA_TRANSFER_CLASS_1 (PS00105), which
contains the pyridoxal-phosphate attachment site. Three iterations on
OWL29.4 were required to reach convergence, at which point a true set
comprising 64 sequences was identified.
An update on SPTR37_9f identified a true set of 55 sequences.
